Clothing matters, below you can find blog posts and website pages to assist with styling your family. I do also have a client closet full of outfits and accessories for children as well as dresses for mum. If you would like to see what I have in your sizes, just let me know and I’d be happy to put some looks together for you.
In addition to the above, its important to ensure that babies and children are appropriately dressed for the weather. Children may become uncooperative if they are too cold or uncomfortable.
Golden hour is the most desirable light to photograph during. It can lead to dreamy and almost ethereal images, its known as the magic hour in the photography world. Overcast skies are also great for lighting. The sky acts as a light diffuser and you can shoot in nearly every direction in comparison to sunlight which is restrictive. During overcast days, brighter and more vivid colours also photograph better which is amazing! Add a pop of sunshine to your images with your choice of clothing.
I love personalisation. I encourage you to bring your child's cherished blanket/teddy or that timeless baby outfit that once adorned you as a child. The details count and are so often overlooked, I love to add these finer touches into my sessions when possible. This also extends to selecting locations, you may like to go for a favourite or beloved place to your family, a season that resonates or accentuating a favourite colour. Involve the kids, have them pick out an element, accessory or something that they can wear/bring that represents them.
Engagement is everything. Instead of having you stare directly into my camera saying cheese, small differences such as looking at the person you’re interacting with, instead of me/the camera can lead to beautiful images. I love to capture natural moments, lots of movement. Let your little one play, hoard rocks and have their moments. During my family sessions you're going to be snuggled into your little one giving them kisses and twirling around in the grass. Feel free to love on and interact with your family as you would if I wasn't there, these lead to the most memorable photographs. The more you naturally move around, snuggle and play with the kids, the more natural your photos are going to be. I’ll always try start with some posed photos so then we can just relax and have fun for the rest of the session.
My sessions are a collaboration with you, I contribute my particular view of the world and unique perspective and you are bringing the people you love and cherish the most, trusting me, to help tell your story.
All families have their own story. The more comfortable you are with me, the better your images and video will turn out. This means I love to take time to get to know a little bit about you before our time together. One of the ways I do this is through my questionnaire below, I get a feel for your personality and what you’re looking to remember about this time in your life. If you follow me on Instagram, I’ll follow you back to keep up with your life, get to know you through your posts and in turn can infuse who you are at the core into my photographs.
Another important aspect to figure out before your session is your why. Why do you want these images? Why a certain session type or season over another? Are you looking for a bespoke piece of art to fit with your interior design or would you instead like a memory book you can visit, time and time again. Perhaps its prints or video memories instead. Once I know, I can better assist with creating your session to the best of my ability.
